Small Amounts of Financing, Significant Impact: Finnvera’s Loan for Microenterprise Growth Reached 345 Businesses

The Loan for Microenterprise Growth, reopened by Finnvera for applications at the beginning of February 2026, has demonstrated a clear demand for financing among small businesses. During its first six months alone, the loan helped hundreds of microenterprises launch investments and accelerate growth across Finland. By the end of July, financing totalling EUR 14.1 million had been granted to 345 companies.

The financing has enabled businesses to start operations, invest in growth and implement development projects that might otherwise have been delayed or not carried out at all.

External financing is often needed in the early stages of growth

The companies receiving financing have typically been very small, with more than half having operated for less than three years. Most employed only a few people.

For many businesses, external financing is a decisive factor in enabling a planned investment, expansion or the recruitment of a new employee.

– The first six months of applications show that small and young companies often have very concrete growth and development needs, but securing financing is not always straightforward. We want to help ensure that profitable and viable projects are not left unrealised due to a lack of financing, says Elisa Sipponen, Director of Financing at Finnvera.

Investments and development projects across Finland

The loan for microenterprises has been granted to companies in nearly all regions of Finland. The largest amounts of financing have been directed to Uusimaa, Southwest Finland and Pirkanmaa.

The loan has been used particularly for launching new business activities, investments and working capital required for growth. Companies have utilised the financing for machinery and equipment purchases, business premises, the development of new products and services, digitalisation and business expansion.

Growth also supports employment

According to the companies’ own estimates, the financed projects could create 332 new jobs. The impact often stems from small but significant growth steps, such as hiring a new employee, expanding the customer base or making an investment that increases production or service capacity.

– The growth of microenterprises is quickly reflected in investments, employment and regional vitality. The impact of financing can be substantial relative to the size of the company. A loan of just a few tens of thousands of euros can determine whether a planned project moves forward now or is not implemented at all. It is particularly significant that more than 100 sole entrepreneurs estimate that the financing will enable them to hire their first employee. For a sole entrepreneur, recruiting the first employee is often a major growth milestone, Sipponen continues.

Finnvera’s loan complements the financing market

The Loan for Microenterprise Growth is designed to complement the financing market. It is intended for businesses entered in the Trade Register that employ fewer than ten people and have a comprehensive plan for profitable business operations, but have not been able to secure financing for their project from a bank or another commercial financier.

The loan amount ranges from EUR 20,000 to EUR 50,000 and can be used for new investments and development measures that go beyond normal business operations and improve the company’s growth, productivity or competitiveness.

– The loan is still available, and based on the first few months, it has responded well to businesses’ financing needs. For a small company, timely financing can be a crucial step toward its next phase of growth, says Sipponen.
