Introduction

The SME Export Finance Programme is designed for Finnish small and medium-sized enterprises. It aims to familiarise enterprises with different methods of export financing. The programme is also suitable for bigger enterprises that need basic information about export finance.

The programme is implemented in close cooperation with banks operating in Finland. A one-day Export Finance Workshop will be held for each participant enterprise by Finnvera and a bank chosen by the enterprise. The emphasis of the programme is on real export transactions and the solutions for financing them.

Finnvera will also organise seminars on export finance for all programme participants.

The programme is free of charge, with the exception of training provided by Finnvera’s cooperation partners, Management Institute of Finland MIF and the International Chamber of Commerce.

Contents of the programme

Participants of the programme will receive basic facts about export finance. They will also have the opportunity, together with experts, to identify financing solutions suited for their own export transactions. The programme is implemented in close cooperation with banks operating in Finland.

A one-day Export Finance Workshop will be held for each participant enterprise by Finnvera and a bank chosen by the enterprise. Usually the workshop is held in enterprise's own premises and it is attended by the enterprise's key personnel with chosen representatives of Finnvera and the bank. The event focuses on services provided by Finnvera and the bank for export financing and the needs that the enterprise has identified in export operations.

Central themes of the Export Finance Workshop include:

  • Finnvera's role in export finance
  • What financing solutions would suit the enterprise’s exports?
  • What types of credit policy and customer financing policy could the enterprise have for its exports?

The aim is to give the enterprise tools for the financing of exports – tools that it can utilise when drawing up tenders submitted to its own customers.

The central feature of the programme is cooperation on real export transactions between the enterprise, its bank and Finnvera.

The enterprise receives support from a designated Finnvera expert and from a team representing the various sectors of Finnvera’s financing. If agreed separately, Finnvera’s expert can participate in negotiations for financing the enterprise’s export project. These negotiations can be held in Finland or abroad.

Russia is an important target coutry for many Finnish exporters. In matters relating to exports to Russia, the enterprises participating in the programme receive support from Finnvera’s Representative Office in St. Petersburg and from an expert in Moscow.

Finnvera will also organise seminars on export finance for all programme participants.

Training

In conjunction with the programme, MIF provides “Management of financial risks in export trade” training. Enterprises participating in Finnvera’s programme are entitled to a discount on this training. MIF offers a compact package illustrating how a person responsible for a company’s finances can minimise the costs of export trade and the associated risks. The goal of the training is to advise Finnish export companies how to conduct profitable business: improvement of net profits and minimisation of risks. The training consists of three one-day units:

  • Cost-effective payment transactions in international trade
  • Legal aspects of international trade
  • Correct and efficient export processes

An experienced and competent trainer is designated for each day. If you so wish, you may bring some of your own challenging situations associated with export trade for joint discussion during the training.

More information about the training and trainers as well as instructions for registration are available on the MIF website (in Finnish).

Additional information by phone: MIF, Jani Tuuri, Product Group Manager, tel. +358 (0)50 5408779.

The International Chamber of Commerce provides globally approved tools for daily routines of international trade. These include sales contract models, delivery and risk management terms, and guidelines for security and payment methods. Companies also receive guidance and training in the use of these tools in everyday challenges.

What is required of the applicant

An enterprise selected for the SME Export Finance Programme

  • engages in profitable business
  • carries out direct exports with own products
  • has already concluded its first export deals
  • wants to grow by increasing exports
  • believes that customer financing solutions could improve its competitiveness in exports and
  • wants to learn more about export finance.

Private banks have the main role in providing financing for export transactions, while Finnvera acts as a guarantor in the arrangements. It is therefore important that the enterprise has good working relations with its bank.
