The environmental impact questionnaire and other requested information is used to establish whether the export credit guarantee involves a project that requires environmental classification. The following questions are used to identify a potential project:
Projects involve e.g. the construction of new production facilities (greenfield projects) and extensions of existing ones that result in increase of capacity, of effluent or emission levels, or of the use of raw materials or natural resources. Work carried out in sensitive areas or in their vicinity also constitutes a project.
Delivery of machinery or equipment associated with existing operations does not normally constitute a project provided that it does not involve any of the changes referred to above. Spare part deliveries do not meet the project criteria either. Single mobile stand-alone-equipment, which do not cause environmental impacts as such, will be classified as non-projects.
Export credit guarantees classified as non-projects will be roughly reviewed for their environmental risks by taking into account the industry sector, location and other information available relating to environmental impacts.
